The Dauphin Island Sea Lab has a strong history of success in providing funding for it's graduate students that rivals that of any marine program in the nation. Student stipend support is available through both university and DISL fellowships, university and DISL-funded teaching assistantships, and extramurally-funded research assistantships.  Over the past several years, over 95% of our students have been fully-funded.

Current annual stipends are:

  • $13,600 for incoming MS students
  • $14,040 for MS students with an approved prospectus
  • $16,000 for incoming Ph.D. students
  • $17,000 for Ph.D. students who have been admitted to candidacy. At many schools, funded students in good academic standing are also provided with tuition fellowships that cover 100% of tuition costs.

In addition to stipend support, the DISL provides significant logistical support for graduate students whose research or program of study is based at DISL.  This support is facilitated through application and award of  'Graduate Research Status'.  Students with 'Graduate Research Status' may request support ranging from library and housing access and desk space, to support for analytical and field research needs, to the procurement of supplies and equipment and travel to regional and national meetings.  In addition, on-campus jobs such as campus greeters, pool maintenance, and cafeteria and special programs assistance are available for students in residence at DISL.

Specific student funding opportunities are listed below:

DISL Graduate Fellowships:

Research Assistantships:
Numerous graduate students are funded through extramurally-funded research assistantships that are available through individual faculty through their research programs.  Most students obtain research assistantships through their faculty advisor, however, in some cases students may be able to obtain assistantships through other DISL faculty who are in need of help with their research projects.  When available, these opportunities will be listed below, however, interested students should also contact prospective faculty directly to obtain information on prospective funding opportunities that have not yet been formally announced.
