Summer Fellowships |
| The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) is offering fellowships for the 2012 Summer Program. Fellowships will be awarded on an academically competitive basis to applicants of demonstrated financial need enrolled at DISL member institutions. They are available to both undergraduate and graduate students registered for a minimum of 4 semester hours per term and attending classes at the Sea Lab. Enrollment for a minimum of two summer sessions at the Sea Lab is required. Deadline for applications is February 11, 2012. |
| Compensation: |

Each fellowship will be awarded with compensation varying from room and board (7-day meal ticket), lab fee and/or activity fee. However, the fellowship does not apply towards tuition costs, or additional expenses for the travel costs associated with courses such as Biology and Conservation of Marine Turtles. Additional fellowships are provided by some DISL member schools. Consult your Campus Liaison Officer for availability on your campus.

| A complete application must include the following documentation: |
- A completed Application Form
- A certified transcript
- A written statement by the student indicating career goals, the role of the DISL summer program in the student's curriculum, and the need for assistance.

| Documentation of need: |
- A letter from the campus Financial Aid Office is preferred. However, a statement by the student indicating how the student's college expenses have been covered and the efforts by the student to support college costs may be accepted in addition to documented proof (tax returns).
- Two letters of recommendation providing an evaluation of the student's academic performance.
- GRE scores (graduate students) ACT/SAT scores (undergraduate students).

Work Study Opportunities |
| Several part-time positions may also be available for students enrolled in a minimum of 4 semester/6 quarter hours per term at the Sea Lab. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in more than one term, but consideration will be given students enrolled in only one term. |

| Dorm Monitor/Student Activities Coordinators: |
- Must be in residence for at least two sessions and be able to be present on campus at least one-half of the weekends. Compensation is $75 per week plus a private room/board in the dormitory. (2 positions available).
- Monitors should plan to arrive at least four days before term starts
- Monitors must be mature, personable and have a solid academic record at their home institution.
- Monitors must have a clean driving record and valid drivers license and cleared to drive on DISL insurance.
- Monitors may be required to attend CPR training if not certified.

| Library Aides: |
- Library Aides are expected to: work up to 10 hours per week during evenings and weekends after normal staff hours, assist students in the library, perform clerical tasks assigned by the Librarian. Compensation is $7.00 per hour. (3 to 4 positions available per session).

Graduate Teaching Assistantships |
- Up to five summer teaching assistantships are available for each term (May term: May 14 - May 25, First Session: May 28 - June 23, Second Session: June 25 - July 20; Third Session (July 23 - August 17) on the campus of Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Assistantships are available for one or more of the terms to qualified applicants.

| Qualifications/Restrictions: |
- Assistants must be in residence at the Sea Lab one week before their assignment begins for orientation and to assist with course set-up. Assistants must also be able to clean and store teaching material after classes end.
- Graduate student status is desired (juniors/senior undergraduates may be considered if undergraduate has successfully completed the course which applying for).
- Assistants must have academic training in at least one of the following areas: ecology, marine biology, marine botany, marine vertebrate zoology, marine invertebrate zoology or oceanography; field experience is strongly preferred. It is also desired that the assistance has successfully completed the course for which they are assisting. In addition, CPR certification is strongly preferred.
- Assistants may not be enrolled in classes due to time commitment and scheduling problems.
- Assistants may be required to work on weekends or go on overnight trips.
- Must have valid drivers license and be cleared to drive on DISL insurance.

- A letter indicating the specific course(s) you can assist with and the session(s) that you are available.
- A transcript itemizing your training and experience in the subject area(s).
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can evaluate your qualifications and previous teaching performance.

| Responsibilities: |
- Work 20 hours per week assisting in preparation of field and laboratory exercises. Instruction of students in the laboratory and some laboratory lecturing may be required. Participation in field exercises and specimen identification is required. Keep laboratory, classroom, lab preps, storage cages and water tables supplied, organized and cleaned.

| Compensation: |
- Teaching assistants will be provided with a stipend of $261 - $327 per week, depending on graduate status. If undergraduate, rate will be different.
